Course Summary:

This presentation will focus on effectively communicating the potential risks, results, and benefits of a procedure or treatment to a patient, to best prepare patients for all potential outcomes and avoid any discrepancies in expectations.


Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the rationale for openness. Appreciate others’ perspectives and needs. Review the qualities of an effective disclosure.
  • Recognize how determining the causes of an adverse outcome informs the path to resolution.
  • Identify skills for engaging in effective disclosure conversations with patients and families.


Jeffrey Hopkins, MD

Dr. Jeffrey Hopkins received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1995. From there, he attended both Medical School and Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. He has been practicing as an attending emergency physician at Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford, MA for over 20 years where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and President of Orion Emergency Services. Dr. Hopkins is a Past-President and Vanguard Award recipient of the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians (MACEP) and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at UMASS Medical School. Dr. Hopkins has been an Integris Group Director since 2014 and currently serves on the Governance, Underwriting, and Executive Committees and is Secretary of the Integris Group Board of Directors.
